Businesses and the economy hibernated to survive coronavirus, but we human beings can emerge from our cocoons of self-isolation and quarantine as radically transformed individuals who are ready to fix climate change.

These are unprecedented times with two global crises: the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.

History is in the making

The invisible coronavirus has thrust our future into our hands – every action we take or refrain from taking today has a life-threatening consequence. What will be the result of this transformative experience in relation to tackling climate change – our other extraordinary global crisis?

Humanity holds the power to determine the future. Would it be a tragic mistake to revert to our old behaviours, thought patterns, and ways of living? Or do we learn from what we have endured and chart a new path forward?

Questions to ponder

As we prepare to emerge from our secluded cocoons of self-isolation and quarantine, here are a few questions to help you understand, assess and grow from your COVID-19 experience.

1. What is the most significant way in which COVID-19 has affected my life?
What has it taught me about the way I live my life?
What are my “essential” needs?
What did I previously think was essential but I’ve now discovered is unnecessary?

2. What has the experience of lockdown or self-isolation taught me about:

  • my state of mind – i.e. my fears, my ignorance, my emotions, my likes and dislikes
  • my wellbeing and health of my body
  • my level of contentment and satisfaction in my internal world
  • my desires for seeking pleasure, spending, consuming from the external world
  • my relationship with my family
  • my understanding of the nation where I live, and the state of its economy and its wellbeing

3. In what ways (both positive and negative) have my needs from Mother Earth and the local environment changed?

4. What have I learned about:

  • my work or study arrangements
  • my home and family behaviours
  • my social life and ways of communication
  • my reliance on other people, business, things, and nature

5. What has been the most positive outcome of this experience? How am I now different? How can I ensure this awareness and transformation continues in my life after the pandemic is over?

6. In what ways can I focus more on improving my emotional resilience for myself so I can cope better mentally in times of crisis and disruption and feel less angry, upset, lonely, bored, frustrated, or fearful?

7. In what ways can I actively contribute to serving:

  • my emotional/creative/personal/spiritual needs
  • my family, especially ageing members
  • my local community, especially vulnerable citizens
  • animals living in my locality
  • nature and the environment where I reside
  • Mother Earth – locally, nationally and globally
